Obituary for Maya Hobday


Maya M. Hobday Our beloved mom CANANDAIGUA - Maya M. Hobday, age 87, passed away on Monday, Sept. 12, 2011, at Elm Manor Nursing Home in Canandaigua. She is survived by four children, Peter (Sabine) Hobday, Hilda (Lawrence) Mannato, Eric Hobday (Polly Hart) and Sylvia (Jim) Moore; six grandchildren, Joshua-John (Lyn) Mannato, Rachel Mannato, Josiah Moore (fiancé Ruthie Romero), Jordan Moore, Nathaniel Moore and Jonathan Moore; two great-grandchildren, Alexis Mannato and Luke Mannato; sister-in-law, Aletka Calvert; and extended family in West Virginia and Germany. She was predeceased by her loving husband, Samuel L. Hobday, in 1998; and brother-in-law, Kenneth E. Hobday. Maya was born on June 7, 1924, in Berlin, Germany to J. Wilhelm and Hildegarde Kahle. She attended the University of Berlin and University of Heidelberg before immigrating to the United States in December, 1948, to marry Samuel. They were wed on December 22 in Washington, D.C. In December, 1953, she and her family moved to Charlotte Street. They later joined the First United Methodist Church, where Maya especially enjoyed the bell choir. Maya was a devoted mother, homemaker and friend. She especially loved the outdoors and was a knowledgeable field botanist. Maya was a member of the Canandaigua Botanical Society since the early 1950s. She was also a member of the Ontario Pathways and a supporter of the Finger Lakes Land Trust. She loved gardening and transformed her yard into beautiful flower and vegetable beds. The family extends special thanks to the staff of Elm Manor Nursing Home for their compassionate care and patience shown to Maya and her family. Friends may call on Friday, September 16, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Johnson-Kennedy Funeral Home Inc., 47 N. Main St., Canandaigua. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 17, at 2 p.m. at Door to Hope Church, 3844 County Road 46, Canandaigua. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Canandaigua.
