We will tour the Butterfly Effect with Jim Norwalk in Geneva, NY on Saturday, August 12, 2023.
Our tour will begin at 10 AM. Due to limited parking in Geneva, we are encouraging folks to carpool from the parking lot behind the Ontario County Courthouse on Sly Street in Canandaigua at 9:00 AM. Please let us know if you would prefer to meet at 10 in Geneva (canandaiguabotanical@gmail.com) and we will provide the address.
Butterfly Effect was started in 2020 by local birdwatcher and nature enthusiast, Jim Norwalk. Jim was born and raised in Buffalo, NY and he became a naturalist in the Pacific Northwest, where he studied at the Evergreen State College and worked as a wildlife biologist. Jim researched the population dynamics of Swainson's warblers in South Carolina for his graduate degree and obtained a Master's in Forestry from North Carolina State University.
Since
moving to Geneva in 2007, Jim has worked as an
Animal and Plant Care
Specialist at Hobart and William
Smith Colleges and has supported local
conservation
efforts through his participation in the Green Committee
and the Shade Tree Committee. As Jim collected seeds
and plants to build
a wildlife-friendly habitat in his own
home garden, he became aware of
the need to increase
community access to native plants. He hopes that
Butterfly
Effect will encourage more individuals to take the small steps
needed to create pollinator pathways in the Finger Lakes.

Eighteen folks met at Jim's Butterfly Effect nursery on a pleasant
Saturday morning (before the afternoon rain). Jim gave a great
history of the Butterfly Effect property at 2678 Lyons Road, which
he purchased in February 2023. Prior to this location, Jim worked
at location in Waterloo with a vision of increasing the biodiversity
of native species in our area. It looks like he's made wonderful
progress despite setbacks along the way. His plans for the future
are sure to benefit pollinators and property owners alike. Many of
us were happy to be able to purchase plants.
Jim talked about the Biota of North America Program where
you can find the North America Plant Atlas to check to see if
plants are native to our area (using scientific names).
Jim designed the nursery area with movable posts to accommodate a growing nursery into the future. A heavy felted landscape cloth is used as flooring. Jim credits Jim Engel of White Oak Nursery for this idea.
Plants are cleverly marked with old shade slats!
