Butterflies, Birds, and Habitats

Even novice birders quickly become aware of the close link between “target” bird species and specialized habitats. But other animals, such as butterflies, also have distinctive key habitat affiliations. The features that define these affiliations can vary widely from those applicable to birds, even where the two co-exist in the same location. This program will explore the subtleties of habitat ecology, with an emphasis on the US East Coast.
Rick Cech is an active field naturalist, trip leader, lecturer, author, and photographer. Among other publications, he is the principal author and photographer of Butterflies of the East Coast: An Observer's Guide (Princeton, 2005) and "A Distributional Checklist of the Butterflies and Skippers of the New York City Area." He is a curatorial affiliate at Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History in Entomology and a past president of the Linnaean Society of NY. Rick has taught nature photography and butterfly identification at the New York Botanical Gardens and Yale Graduate School Department of Ecology and Environmental Biology.
